PREPARATION

You can’t make an omelet without breaking a few eggs and you can’t learn calculus without a basic understanding of mathematics. Vedanta is no different. The prerequisites are: discernment between the Real and the apparent; dispassion or the freedom from binding likes and dislikes; self-control, withdrawal of the senses, forbearance, trust pending verification, and most importantly, an intense desire for liberation. No college degrees or high IQ required. Some of us are already qualified, like the little boy Nachiketa in the Kathopanishad, but others have to work at it. Fortunately we have access to the teachings of the Upanishads that provide the roadmap to self-discovery, freedom from suffering, and moksha, liberation. All we have to do is listen, understand, and contemplate.
